Margaret Jean Kennedy passed from this life on December 20, 2019 after a hard battle with Alzheimer's, with her husband at her side, and in the care of the wonderful staff of Brookdale Willows Assisted Living and Grayson County Hospice.
Jean was born on August 19, 1936 in Chamberino, New Mexico. She met and fell in love with Phillip Edward Kennedy at the wedding of mutual friends in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She had been working as a switch board operator. They married 6 short weeks later on August 4, 1957. They made a few different moves while Phil served in the Air Force, and then settled in Tempe, Arizona at the completion of his service. In 1976, they moved to Lucas, Texas and then in 2000 they moved to Van Alstyne. Jean spent her life taking care of her family. She made the best cookies and her amazing cheesecake recipe is still used at holidays. Besides her family, she loved flowers and collecting interesting looking rocks. Her 2 children and 6 grandchildren all have memories of special family trips and quality family time together. Having grown up the daughter of a farmer-rancher, Jean knew the meaning of hard work and worked by the side of her husband for many years supporting his real estate and home rental "hobby". Phil and Jean were members of the First Baptist Church in Van Alstyne. Jean is preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Vada Harper; as well as her 2 sisters, Doris Cavnar, Diana Tow; and brother, Gary Harper. Jean is survived by her husband; their 2 children, Keith Kennedy and wife, Janene; and Kathleen Elsbury and husband and, Stephen, as well as 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Jean's sweet spirit will be greatly missed. - - - Scoggins Funeral Home Phillip Edward Kennedy passed from mortality on October 12, 2020 due to cancer.
Phil was born in Claypool, Arizona on July 30, 1934. He spent most of his youth in the Globe/Miami area of Arizona. He attended New Mexico State University where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. Weeks after graduation, he went to the wedding of some friends where he met Margaret Jean Harper who became the love of his life. They married six weeks later on August 4, 1957. They moved several times while Phil was in the United States Air Force. He served as a navigator in the Air Force during a time of peace. After his service, he went to work for Motorola and they lived in Tempe, Arizona until 1976. They then moved to Lucas, Texas until 2000 when they settled in Van Alstyne, Texas. Phil enjoyed many things in life. We spent a lot of time as a family camping and fishing. He and his brother would scuba dive off the California coast. Phil was also a hard worker and was always looking for a way to make extra money. For a while, he owned many rentals and invested in land and even cattle. He also had a fence painting and repair business for a time. In later years, he and Mom turned to volunteer work. They helped deliver Meals on Wheels. He and Jean were members of the First Baptist Church of Van Alstyne and he was involved there with Great Days of Service. Phil was the original "Monday Man", helping make repairs to the Church and organizing others to help. Phil is preceded in death by his wife and his parents, Cyril and Dolly Kennedy. Phil is survived by both of his siblings, Howard Kennedy with wife Ling of Phoenix, Arizona and Mary Boyd of Glendale, Arizona; his two children Keith Kennedy with wife Janene of Tom Bean, Texas and Kathleen Elsbury with husband Stephen of Aztec, New Mexico as well as six grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Phil will be greatly missed. The family has been extremely touched by the care and love of neighbors and the communities of Van Alstyne and Brookdale Willows in Sherman. We are grateful for the care also given him by Sunrise Home Health and Hospice Plus. Susan Hawkins © 2024 If you find any of Grayson CountyTXGenWeb links inoperable, please send me a message. |
