Alvin
(AV) Whitehead, 94, of Van Alstyne passed away on January 12, 2018. He
graduated Van Alstyne High School in 1940 and then attended Texas
A&M University. He married Allene Jay on July 11, 1942 and they
recently celebrated their 75th anniversary. AV served in the infantry
during World War II. He was a lifetime member of First Christian Church
of Van Alstyne where he served as a Deacon, Elder, Board Member, Choir
Director, and Sunday School Teacher. He carried the mail for the Van
Alstyne Post Office from 1948-1979. Along with caring the mail, he was
a local bee keeper and rancher. He enjoyed square dancing, traveling,
gardening, and time at his cabin on Lake Texoma with family. He served
on the Van Alstyne City Council for 8 years and on the Zoning and
Ordinance committee. For 70 years, he was a member of Mantua Masonic
Lodge No. 209.
AV is survived by his wife, Allene, four children, Brenda Hale and her spouse Jody, Gary Whitehead and his spouse Colleen, Kent Whitehead and his spouse Marilyn, and Suzanne Exley and her spouse Jim. Also surviving are his ten grandchildren Gina Dimion, Angela Koop, Tim Hale, Sharon Giesbrecht, April Giesbrecht, Rachel Smith, Arin Whitehead, Emma Whitehead-Newman, Kendra Mullins, and Jay Whitehead. He also has 24 great grandchildren and 14 great great grandchildren. The family will be at Scoggins Funeral Home in Van Alstyne on Tuesday January 16th for Visitation at 10:30 am and a Funeral Service at 11:30 am. Burial will follow in the Van Alstyne Cemetery. Allene Jay Whitehead, 94, of Van Alstyne passed away on February 15, 2020. Allene was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She lived her whole life in Van Alstyne, Texas.
Allene was the daughter of Victor Jay and Lira England Jay and was the 5th out of 7 children. She graduated from Van Alstyne High School in 1942 and married her high school sweetheart, A.V. Whitehead, on July 11, 1942. They were married for a loving 75 years before his death in 2018. Allene's memory is carried on by her sister, Barbara Holder; her 4 children, Brenda Hale and spouse, Jody; Gary Whitehead and wife, Colleen; Kent Whitehead and wife, Marilyn; and Suzanne Exley and husband, Jim. Also surviving are her 10 grandchildren, Gina Dimion; Angela Koop; Tim Hale; Sharon Giesbrecht; April Giesbrecht; Rachel Smith; Arin Whitehead; Emma Whitehead; Kendra Mullins; and Jay Whitehead. She had 28 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great-grandchildren. Allene's faith was central to her life. She was a member of the First Christian Church for 77 years, serving as a Sunday School teacher, Deacon, church board member, choir member and in Christian Women's Fellowship. Allene was committed to her Upper Room daily devotional. She was involved in the Van Alstyne community through Eastern Star, Book Club, and frequently hosted social events at her home for friends and neighbors; she enjoyed gardening, bird watching, collecting antiques, bottling and selling honey and hosting family dinners. Funeral service was Wednesday morning, February 19, 2020. Burial followed at Van Alstyne Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Christian Church of Van Alstyne.
