Van Alstyne, Texas -- Joyce Jay Hunter, born October 31, 1934, left this earth peacefully October 26, 2017 to join her beloved husband Quinn Hunter in heaven.
Joyce was born & raised in Van Alstyne, Texas. At the age of 15 she entered North Texas State University graduating at the age of 19.
Joyce married Quinn Hunter July 24, 1953 and began her teaching career in Springfield, Missouri as a new bride at the age of 19. An outstanding, loving and gifted teacher for 34 years, Joyce was honored with the nomination for The Ross Perot Teaching Excellence Award. She finished her last 22 years teaching in Richardson ISD.
In 1973, Joyce met Liz Barton on the 1st day of school. Both were wearing the same dress. They quickly became lifetime friends & simultaneously enrolled at SMU in a Master’s program where both finished with a 4.0 GPA.
Another close friend Jeanne Case, introduced Joyce’s husband Quinn to the world of Barber Shop singing in 1965. For the next 50 years that was Joyce & Quinn’s passion and hobby. They enjoyed many great Barber Shop trips to competitions around the U.S. & the world including performances in England & Scotland with an incredible trip to Paris. Joyce was thrilled to watch Quinn compete with The Vocal Majority while winning 11 World Championships!
In 2009, Joyce & Quinn moved into the home of her only child Marla, son-in -aw Mike Nunally & granddaughter Peyton to enjoy her final years with family.
Joyce’s friends were extremely important to her and their mutual love and admiration for Joyce was incredible. Thanks to Jim, Judy & Greg Clancy, Ruth Ann & Gary Parker, Diane & Benny Valek, Jeanne Case, Wendy DeCrow, Linda & Dean Clubb, Liz & Craig Morrow, her Care Givers Lisa Thompson & Keisha Jackson and many more close friends.
Graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Van Alstyne Cemetery in Van Alstyne. Memorial service will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Highland Park Methodist Church in Dallas. Donations may be made to The Vocal Majority. Services are under the direction of Scoggins Funeral Home & Crematory in Van Alstyne, Texas.
