Charles Ray 'Chock' Bridges 23 May 1927 - 26 April 2023 Charles
passed away and into the arms of our loving Father on the morning of
April 26th, 2023. He was born to Mattie K. Bridges and Reubin L.
Bridges in Westminster, Texas on May 23, 1927 (his mother’s birthday!).
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 2nd, 2023 at 1:00 PM at
Scoggins Funeral Home in Van Alstyne. Interment will follow at the Van
Alstyne Cemetery. The family will receive visitors Tuesday at 12:00pm
at the funeral home prior to the service.
Charles/Chock/Charlie received his education in the Van Alstyne school system, graduating in 1944. He was very proud of his school and participated and lettered in all the sports. He also attended North Texas Business College & The University of North Texas. After graduating from high school, he joined the Merchant Marines for a year. He was then drafted into the United States Army in early 1945. He received his basic training in San Antonio, Texas. Chock was sent to Fort Lewis, Washington for further training to be deployed overseas. He was on maneuvers on Mt. Ranier when he was injured. He spent three months in the Army hospital in Fort Lewis prior to being honorably discharged. He married Bettye Ruth Brooks in Sherman on February 14th, 1946. The marriage endured for 63 years. They moved to Dallas and then settled in Grand Prairie where they raised their family for 36 years. Charles and Bettye were avid travelers from the 60’s to the 90s. They went to Europe two times, Hawaii three times, Las Vegas, Branson, Bermuda, Aruba, Canada, and most of the States. Charles was employed at the I.R.S. and Veterans Administration in Dallas, after which he went to work for the L.T.V Corporation (now Lockheed Martin) in Grand Prairie where he worked as an industrial engineer for 30 years until he retired in 1982. During part of that time, he and his brother, Cecil, owned and operated Bridges Tool & Supply Co in Grand Prairie. Chock was an avid sports fan holding season tickets and bonds to the Dallas Cowboys in the 60s and 70s. He also had season tickets to the Gopher Bowl in Grand Prairie for years, where his son Scott played football. He never missed an activity his children participated in through all the years in the Grand Prairie school system. He also coached some of his son’s basketball teams. Charles was preceded in death by his beloved wife Bettye, his brothers Cecil and R.L. Bridges, his sisters Dorothy Greenberg, Lucille Magee, Violet Womack, and Jean Davis, his nephews Randy, Russell, Ronnie, David, and Jerry, nieces Patsy, Holly, and Kathy, and his parents Reubin and Mattie. Charles is survived by his daughter Paula Mullen, son Scott Bridges, nephews Rick, Robin, Terry, Alan, nieces Kay, Narsha, and Ginger, grandchildren Drew, Daniel, Barrett, and Brook, and 5 great-grandchildren. 1928-2009 SHERMAN - Bettye Ruth Bridges passed away on July 24, 2009 at 9:45 p.m. after a long battle with cancer. Bettye was born near Tom Bean on March 29, 1928 to Mary Tommie Brooks and Walter M. Brooks. She was the middle child of three children. She was raised near Gunter. She graduated in 1945 from Whitewright High School. Bettye married Charles R. Bridges (Chock) on Feb. 14, 1946 at the First Baptist Church in Sherman. She worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for 29 years. She retired as a staff supervisor/executive secretary. She also worked for Merle Norman Cosmetics as a beauty consultant. She was an avid supporter of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at Flesher Funeral Home in Van Alstyne with Bro. Bob Layman officiating. Interment will follow at the Van Alstyne Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 7 - 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Charles R. Bridges of Sherman; daughter, Paula Bridges Mullen of Euless; son, Scott Lee Bridges of Dallas; grandchildren, Barrett Walker of Grand Prairie; Brook Bridges of Azle; Drew Mullen of Euless; and Daniel Mullen of Austin; niece, Elaine McDaniel and husband Mike and nephew Melvin Droegemeier and wife Jan all of Amarillo. She is preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Leona Brooks Hunter; and her brother, Walter Harless Brooks. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
