CHARTER MEMBER OF CHURCH
DIES
MRS. D. K. TATE
Van Alstyne - Death called the
seventh and last charter member of the Van
Alstyne Baptist church here at 2 p.m.
Thursday when Mrs. D. K. Tate, 85, died at
her home following 10 days of serious
illness. She had been in ill health for the
past few years.
Services were scheduled for 2 p.m.
Friday at the First Baptist church with Rev
Frank Johnston, pastor, officiating. The
Rev. Llloyd Mottley of the Christian church
and the Rev. Truett G. Craft of the
Methodist church were to assist. Burial was
to be in Van Alstyne cemetery with
Fox-Fanning in charge.
Mrs. Tate was born June 18, 1855, in
Jefferson City, Tenn. as Miss Betty
Sundeland. She came to Texas with her
parents
at the age of 15 in 1870, settling three
miles east of Van Alstyne. The family
traveled the entire distance in an ox wagon,
requiring seven weeks to make the trip.
She was married July 29, 1875, to D.
K. Tate, who died in 1920. When the Baptist
church at Sister Grove, near Van Alstyne,
was organized by the Rev. Jim Hayes, she
joined that body. When the Van Alstyne
Baptist church was organized in 1882, she
joined that organization., she and six
others being charter members. The six other
members preceded her in death.
For the past 70 years, Mrs. Tate
made her home in Van Alstyne with the
exception of two years spent in Blue Ridge.
Survivors include three children,
Sam Tate of Sherman, Louie and Homer Tate of
Van Alsytne; 18 grandchildren and 18 great
grandchildren.
Pallbearers named were David Tate,
Knox Tate, Clifton DeBerry, Sam Tate Jr.,
Jewel McMillan and Jim McMillan.
