Janie Skipworth Misses 100 Mark

TOM BEAN - Granny Skipworth, Tom Bean's oldest resident, didn't reach that 100th birthday that she was aiming at when she celebrated her 99th natal day last Jan. 1.
Mrs. Janie Upchurch Skipworth died Saturday morning in a Sherman hospital a little more than two months short of the centennial mark.
Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church here Monday at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in the
Van Alstyne Cemetery with Earnheart Funeral Home in charge.

"I don't know whether I'll make 100 or not." Granny Skipworth said on her last birthday. "But then I didn't know whether I would make 41 back on my 40th birthday."
Mrs. Skipworth was the New Year's Baby in Burchville, Ky., as 1870 dawned. She and Amber Skipworth were married when she was 16 years old. They had 11 sons and one daughter, and Granny Skipworth
left 164 descendants, including 42 grandchildren, 86 great-grandchildren, and 26 great-great-grandchildren. Her husband lived to be 91.

Active almost to her final illness, Mrs. Skipworth did the housework for her son, Leslie, with whom she made her home. That included canning garden vegetables and making jellies.
Her last trip to the hospital was second during the long life of Mrs. Skipworth. A kidney ailment put her
in the hospital for the first time back when she was 97 but she came back about as active as ever.
