J. E. Turner

Passed Away Unexpectedly - - Had Been
Suffering With Attack of Grip

J. E. Turner, one of the town's oldest and most highly respected citizens, was called to his reward Saturday morning at about 2:30. His death was a great surprise to our little city. His illness was thought
to be only a slight attack of grip, and many did not even know that he was indisposed until they arose
and went about their business. It was then they learned that while the snow had silently fallen during the night the spirit of this good man had as silently winged its flight back to him who gave it. A wife, four sons and a daughter are left to . . . The sons are Ed, Amos, Tom and Burt, and the daughter Mrs. Wylie of Trenton.

Mr. Turner had been a citizen of Van Alstyne for twenty years, having come here from Tennessee and was in his seventy-fifth year. He has for a number of years been retired from any active vocation on account of his age, and has been leading a quiet life, living rather for eternity than for time, and goes down to the grave, the place where all meet on a level, with the assurance of a better life beyond.

Rev. Dunning spoke a few appropriate words over the body at the Christian Church Saturday afternoon
at 3 o'clock, and the interment took place immediately at Van Alstyne Cemetery.

Fifteen minutes before Mr. Turner's death he turned in bed and complained that his stomach was paining him, but when Mrs. Turner asked him if she could do anything for him, said no. Soon afterward he was seized with a rigor, and before his son, Amos, could reach his side from another room, he was dead.

Van Alstyne Leader
December 31, 1925

Mrs. Mary Turner was born as Mary Cartwright in Smith County, Tennessee on January 25, 1845. On January 2. 1868, she was married to James E. Turner, who passed into rest on February 22, 1904. To
this union were born six children, four of whom survive, as follows: Bert Turner, Sherman, Texas; Tom Turner, Dallas, Texas; Amos Turner, Fort Worth, Texas; Mrs. J. H. Riley, Trenton, Texas. Those who have passed into rest are Clarence and Cornelius. In 1884, Mrs. Turner united with the Christian church and for forty-one years remained a consistent and faithful adherent of that faith. On December 26, 1925, she passed into rest at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Riley, at Trenton. Mrs. Turner was 80 years, 11 months and 1 day old at the time of her death.

After the death of Mr. Turner, Mrs. Turner made her home in Van Alstyne for ten to twelve years, moving from here to Trenton, where she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Riley. She frequently returned here for a visit, always finding a cordial welcome at the home of Dr. and Mrs. T. S. Cartwright and from hosts of others of her friends in this community. Her splendid womanhood and high character made of her one most sincerely beloved by all who knew her and there is genuine sorrow and regret that she has passed from among us into eternal rest.

The body was brought to Van Alstyne for interment, funeral services being held at the First Christian Church at 2 p.m., Sunday, conducted by Rev. Leo Johnston, the pastor. Despite the severe weather, a number of friends gathered to hear the last tributes paid to this splendid woman and to witness the
return of her mortal remains to the parent earth. The service was an impressive one, and the utterance
of the man of God were echoed in the sentiments of those present as he eulogized the life and deeds of this devout Christian, faithful wife and mother, and worthy neighbor and friend.

At the local cemetery, where interment was had, the rites committing the body to the grave were spoken and the sorrowing relatives and dispersed leaving the mortal remains in the keeping of the element from which they came.

Pallbearers were as follows: Active - J. B. Moore, L. A. Cartwright, J. H. Shield, T. H. Masie, Dr. T. S. Cartwright, F. J. Cartwright.

Honorary - R. M. Stephenson, J. W. Stephens, Dr. S. D. Moore, L. B. Edwards, S. H. Pattie, R. H. Douglas,
L. P. Welker.

To the family and relatives, the sincere sympathy of all of their friends and the people of this community goes out in their bereavement.
