Taylor 1866 - 1947  Funeral Rites Held for Devout Christian Monday Afternoon Funeral services for Edward Kelly Taylor, 72, member of one of the oldest pioneer families of this section were held Monday afternoon at the First Christian church with the Rev.Lloyd Mottley conducting, assisted by the Rev.Lee Johnston, of Dallas, formerly pastor of the local Christian church. Burial was in the Van Alstyne Cemetery directed by Fox-Fanning. Mr. Taylor died Saturday afternoon following a short illness.. He was a native born Texan, being born and reared at Mantua. On April 8, 1891, he was married to Miss Sallie Kelly, great-granddaughter of Collin McKinney. He had been a member of the Christian church for 45 years where he had truly been a big factor in that church. He followed the teachings of reflection continuously and the . . . held for him by his fellowmen was evident in the large and perfume floral offering. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Sallie Taylor, one daughter, Miss Janine Taylor, of Van Alstyne,one son, Jack Taylor, of New York City and one brother, Scott Taylor, of Van Alstyne. Mr. Taylor was born November 14, 1864 at Mantua. He moved to Van Alstyne when the town was first built here where he has since resided. Funeral services were held last Monday at the local Christian Church at 4 p.m. for Mrs. Sallie Taylor, age 81, who died at her home Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Taylor was born April 8, 1866 to Jack M. and Peggy Ann Kelly, pioneers of this community. In 1891 on the fourth of April she was married to Edward K. Taylor who proceeded her in death by eleven years. Mrs. Taylor was a great-granddaughter of Colin McKinney after whom both Collin County and McKinney were named. Her grandfather and grandmother were Mr. and Mrs. Ashley McKinney, two of the charter members of the Van Alstyne Christian Church which is believed to be the oldest Christian Church in Texas. For sixty-two years Mrs. Taylor has been associated with this Church having become a member under the pioneer ministry of the late Elder Bob Horn. Although in ill health for the last twenty years with constantly increasing discomfort Mrs. Taylor still represented the N. Texas pioneer stock at its best. Her fortitude in adversity as well as her fidelity to her home, her friends and neighbors of both the past and the present earned for her the admiration of all who knew her. Her generation bridged the gap between the wilderness of yesterday and the Van Alstyne of today. They were a stalwart lot; their simple, profound admiration of and adherence to the right as they saw it is a treasured contribution to the present generation. With the passing of Mrs. "Sallie", a part of traditional Van Alstyne has passed. She was survived by a daughter, Miss Janice Taylor of Van Alstyne and a son, Jack Taylor of Dallas and several nieces and nephews. Services were conducted by the Rev. Lloyd Mottley, pastor of the Christian Church. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Waldo Funeral Home of Sherman with interment in the Van Alstyne cemetery. Pallbearers were: Dr. C.H. Beseda, Creed Taylor; Henry Hynds; S. McKinney, Carl Umphress, Roscoe Garver, Moore Cartwright and J.O. Baker. Out of town friends and relatives who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Jack N. Janice Taylor 1892 - 1969 Van Alstyne Leader Thursday, 19 June 1969 TUESDAY RITES FOR JANICE TAYLOR HELD Services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Flesher Funeral Chapel for Miss Janice Taylor, who died Monday at 10:30 a.m. in a Van Alstyne nursing home. She was born Jan. 16, 1892, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward K. Taylor. Miss Taylor was a retired school teacher, having taught in Anna, Gunter and Denison schools. She received her schooling from North Texas College and was a member of the First Christian Church. Rev. Richard Cerney officiated with burial in Van Alstyne Cemetery.
