Gunn Dowd 1852 - 1926 Mary E. Dowd 1860 - 1893 Van Alstyne Leader February 18, 1926 pg. 7 Interment services for the remins of G. Dowd, former resident of Van Alstyne, were held at the local cemetery on February 15, at 2 p.m. Mr. Dowd died at Corsicana, where he had made his home for several years, on Friday February 12, his remains reaching Van Alstyne via the H & T C railroad at 9:31 Monday morning. The body was taken to the residence of Rev. W. A. Strickland where it remained until the hour for interment. The service was in charge of the local lodge of Odd Fellows, burial being held according to the rites of that Order. Rev. F. C. Dick, offered the prayer at the conclusion of the service. Mr. Down was born at Burnsville, Mississippi, on July 8th, 1852. He was married to Miss Mary E. Strickland, a sister to Rev. Strickland on April 15, 1878. To this union were born six sons as follows: adolphus Dowd, Chicago, Ill.; George Tillet Dowd, Lamesa, Texas; Edward Dowd, Los Angeles, California; Cephus Dowd, Canyon, Txas; Edward Alfred Dowd, Pittsburg, Pa. All of the sons were present at the funeral and acted as pallbearers. Mrs. Dowd died at Van Alstyne on April 10, 1893. Mr. Dowd was baptized into the fellowship of the Baptist church at Glendale, Mississippi, in August 1870, and remained a faithful adherent of that faith until his death. In 1879, he moved to Texas, settling at Van Alstyne, where he lived for several years. Leaving Van Alstyne he lived at different times in the old Indian Territory, New Mexico, and other States, taking up his residence at Corsicana, in 1919, and living in that city until his death. Following the death in 1893 of Mrs. Dowd, Mr. Dowd was again married and is survived by his widow and six sons, the issue of his first marriage. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist church, corsicana, conducted by Rev. Kennedy, the pastor, following which the body was brought to Van Alstyne for interment.
