MRS. JANE SLAUGHTER PASSES AWAY

One by one the pioneers of this community pass away. It is but a few weeks since the passing of Mrs. Lewallen was recorded. Now we have to chronicle the entrance of Mrs. Jane Slaughter into the bourne from whence no traveler returns - the rest promised the faithful and the reward granted those who weary not in well-doing.
Mrs. Slaughter was 71 years, 6 months old at the time of her death. She was a member of the McKinney family - a family, the history of which is indelibly woven into the history of Texas in the making, of Collin and Grayson Counties in their development, being a great grand niece of Collin McKinney, pioneer, one of the founders of this State, and for whom McKinney and Collin County are named. Mrs. Slaughter was also a niece of former Governor Throckmorton.
In 1871, she was married to J. P. Slaughter, brother to F. R. and H. J. Slaughter, prominent citizens of Van Alstyne, of whom F. R. Slaughter is the only brother now living. To this union were born five children: Mrs. Lucy Scott of Austin; Frank Slaughter of Howe, Mrs. Minnie Hall of Denton; Miss Ethel Slaughter of Howe; Mrs. David Slaughter of Howe.
Death closed the record of a long life of service and of christian consecration when Mrs. Slaughter joined the innumerable host which rests beneath the shade of the trees. Hers was a life full of good deeds and worthy of emulation; hers was a character which ranked high as mankind reckons worth and honor and integrity; hers was an example which bequeaths to her children and to posterity an heritage of which they justly may be proud. And in her passing from earth, all who knew her, rever her memory as the memory of one who during a long stay on earth, looked always to the longer stay in the reals of the blest.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church at Howe Monday morning, being attended by large members of friends from the entire community. Interment was had at the Van Alstyne cemetery, and the services here were attended by many who had known and loved Mrs. Slaughter in life, who gathered at the final resting place to evidence their last tribute of respect. The services were conducted by Rev. Fuller of Bells, assisted by Revs. J. E. Vinson of Denison and Wright of Howe.
The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved relatives.
