One of the nation's best-known horse trainers and rodeo cowboys died Tuesday, leaving a gap in the Van Alstyne and Howe communities. L.N. Siked died of emphysema in Wilson N. Jones Hospital in Sherman at the age of 77. Services will be at 3 p.m. in the First Baptist Church in Howe, with burial in Van Alstyne Cemetery, conducted by Flesher Funeral Home. Duane Peters, Dennis Wilkinson, Jim Koontz and Johnny Boren will officiate, and pallbearers will be nephews. Born in Bell County, Texas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jake N. Sikes, he married Helen McLear on Oct. 18, 1928, in Rogers. Sikes went into competition rodeo roping in the late 1920s and remained active on the national. . . Sherman Democrat June 11, 1991 pg. A6 Van Alstyne - Services for Helen Elizabeth Sikes, 82-year-old Howe homemaker who died Sunday at Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Van Alstyne, will be held at 2 p.m. today in Flesher Funeral Home in Van Alstyne. Duane Peters will officiate with burial in Van Alstyne Cemetery. Mrs. Sikes was born in Rogers,the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. V.B. Melear. On Oct. 18, 1927, she married L.N. Sikes in Rogers. She was a member of the Rogers Church of Christ. Surviving are her daughters, Frances Saunders of Gatesville and Jan Powers of Howe; sons, Sonny Sikes of Huntsville and Jack Sikes of Van Alstyne; brother, B.V. Melear, Jr. of Jasper; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Dude Crook, Bob Cavendar, Jim Saunders, David Saunders, Larry Sikes and B.J. Sikes.
