29 July 1926 THOMAS J. UMPHRESS Funeral services were held for Thomas J. Umphress on July 24, who was a resident of Texas for more than 50 years. He was one of the most highly regarded men in this section. Mr. Umphress died at his home in Blue Ridge, Texas, July 23. Born at Dadeville, Alabama, in 1851, Mr. Umphress was 75 years of age. He was a member of a family of 16 children, and was the last of the boys of the family. Mrs. J. W. O'Daniel, of Van Alstyne is the last of the surviving immediate members of the family. John Umphress and Lyman Umphress of Van Alstyne are nephews of the deceased. In 1875, Mr. Umphress came to Texas, settling at Old Mantua, 3 miles south of Van Alstyne in Collin Co. He made his home here for 25 years, moving to Blue Ridge about 1900. He was married to Miss Josie Copeland, by whom he is survived, and also by a daughter, Mrs. Bruce Taylor, of Clayton, N.M., and a son, Joe Umphress of Blue Ridge. About 25 years ago Mr. Umphress became a member of the Methodist church, retaining his affiliation with that faith until his death. The body was brought to Van Alstyne and the services at the First Methodist church were conducted by Rev. C. B. Fielder, pastor, Rev. Leo Johnston, pastor of the Christian Church, and by J.D.L.McKinney, a life-long friend of the deceased. Interment was at the Van Alstyne cemetery, where many friends gathered to pay final respect, and to give evidence of the sorrow which they felt at the passing of this good man.
