Eula Umphress 1873 - 1970 Van Alstyne Leader Thursday, June 18, 1970 Eula Cannon Umphress Dies -Marks End of Pioneer Generation In County Services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, n the First Christian Church in Van Alstyne for Mrs. Eula Cannon Umphress, 97, member of a prominent pioneer family in Grayson County. Mrs. Umphress died early Tuesday in a local nursing home. Officiating at the service were Rev. Richard Cerney, pastor of the Van Alstyne First Christian Church, and Rev. Jesse Pugh of the nursing home in Van Alstyne. Flesher Funeral Home directed the funeral. Mrs. Umphress was born Jan. 27, 1873 at Cannon, the daughter of the late Reese M. and Texana Dumas Cannon, and the local Cannon community near Van Alstyne bears the family name.She was the granddaughter of J.P.Dumas, who was one of the founders of the Merchants and Planters Bank in Sherman in 1873. Dumas was a surveyor and is credited with surveying Grayson County. He also laid out the city of Dallas in 1844 and built the third house ever built in Dallas. He could ride from Van Alstyne to Sherman without getting off his own land. Mrs. Umphress mother, Texana, was the first white child ever born in Grayson County. She was married to John Umphress April 12, 1893. Umphress was a founder of the Van Alstyne First National Bank and served as its president and on the board of directors for more than 63 y ears. He preceded her in death in 1953. She was a member of the First Christian Church and was a community leader during earlier years. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Henry D. Hynds; four grandchildren, Mrs. Eugene Ross, Mrs. Jan Benton, John K. Hynds and Robert H. Hynds; and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Carl Umphress, all of Van Alstyne; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Cannon, located 6 miles east of Van Alstyne, was first settled by Elijah Cannon of Pickens County, S.C.Elijah brought his 11 children and settled here in 1852, along with their widowed aunt, Patsy Brown, and his slaves who later bore the name Boyd. He purchased 700 acres of undeveloped land and with his slaves and sons developed the land later known as Cannon.His four eldest sons served in the Confederate Army during the war. John Cannon established the Methodist Church, one of two in the area. Reece became the more prominent member of the family, establishing a cotton gin in 1868, a grist mill, and also helped establish the Centennial Masonic Lodge in 1879, as well as the First National Bank in Van Alstyne. Alstyne - Carl Cannon Umphress, 65, of Van Alstyne rancher and farmer,
died unexpectedly about 8:30 p.m. Saturday in his home. Funeral
arrangements are pending at Flesher Funeral Home. Mr. Umphress was an
extensive landowner in the Van Alstyne area, raised registered cattle
and Shetland ponies, and was a director and stockholder in the First
National Bank of Van Alstyne.He was born May 22, 1895, in Van Alstyne,
son of Mrs. John Umphress and the late Mr. Umphress. His father was a
former president of the bank. Mr. Umphress was a graduate of Van
Alstyne High School and attended Austin College in Sherman. He was
active in Van Alstyne civic affairs and was a member of the First
Christian Church. He was married to Miss Glen Harrell in 1914 in Van
Alstyne. Survivors are his wife; his mother, Mrs. John Umphress of Van
Alstyne; a daughter, Mrs. Gene Ross of Van Alstyne; a sister, Mrs.
Henry Hynds of Van Alstyne; and two grandchildren. Glenn H. Umphress 1897 - 1985 Graveside
services for Glenn Harrell Umphress of Van Alstyne, 88, were held
Sunday in the Van Alstyne Cemetery. She died Friday in Hilltop Haven
Nursing Home in Gunter. Mrs. Umphress was born in Texas, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.B. Harrell, and married Carl Umphress Aug 18, 1915, in Van Alstyne. She was a member of the Van Alstyne Baptist Church and a charter member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority.She attended the University of Oklahoma. Surviving are her daughter, Virginia Ross of Van Alstyne; two grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Flesher Funeral Home was in charge.
