Gunter, Texas -- Clara Neal Stapleton Hedges at age 96, on April 20, 2015 in Frisco, Texas joined her Lord. Clara was born to Zenethen “Buddy” Stapleton and Bertha Morriss Stapleton on April 25th, 1918. She was one of eight siblings. By age 13 both of the parents were deceased.

Clara married Lawrence Ray Hedges Sr. in November 1935. Lawrence passed away in 1984 at the age of 72 after 47 years of marriage. They had four children. In their years of marriage they lived in Dripping Springs, Driftwood, San Antonio, France, Monterey, San Angelo, McKinney, and Gunter. In 2010 she moved to Frisco, with her daughter and son in law.

In the forties Lawrence rejoined the Army for a twenty-year career. In 1952 they were stationed in France for three years. While there, they traveled to Switzerland, Germany, Spain, and Paris. Clara served in both the Garden Club and Gunter Community Club and held offices including President for many years.

Clara loved her church. When she was a young girl, she walked by herself to church and soon was baptized in Onion Creek. She taught pre-kindergarten Sunday school and young teen girls for many years. She went on two mission trips to Grenada in her later years.

Clara was always ready to travel. She went all over the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. In between trips she would read, sew quilts, garden, paint pictures and play 42. Clara especially loved to spend time with her children and was proud of them all.

Clara Neal Stapleton Hedges is survived by: Son, Lawrence Ray Hedges Jr, Son, Wesley Lowell Hedges and wife Gloria, Son, Byron Neal Hedges and wife Brenda, Daughter, Emily Ann Hedges Richardson and husband Sam. 7 grandchildren, 11 great- grandchildren, 4 great- great- grandchildren.

Services will be held Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Scoggins Funeral Home in Van Alstyne. Burial will follow in the Van Alstyne Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Scoggins Funeral Home and Crematory, 637 W. Van Alstyne Parkway, Van Alstyne, Texas. 903-482-5225.
