ALSTYNE Tex., Nov. 18 (Special). - Lyman Umphress, 55 years old, active
vice president and cashier of the First National bank of Van Alstyne,
died Friday afternoon at 1:35 at his home in Van Alstyne following a
heart attack last Tuesday. Funeral services will be held Sunday
afternoon at 2:30 at the First Methodist church of Van Alstyne.
Burial will be in the Van Alstyne cemetery. The heart attack occurred on his twenty seventh wedding anniversary. He was a member of the Methodist church for over forty years. He was actively associated with the First Nation bank of Van Alstyne for thirty-six years. Besides being active vice president and cashier of the First National bank, he was a director of the Van Alstyne Cotton Oil Co., and the Planters' Gin Co., was a large land owner and the owner of Van Alstyne city and Dallas real estate. He is survived by his widow, one son, Carter Umphress of Van Alstyne; one brother, J. Umphress, president First National bank, Van Alstyne, and by three sisters, Mrs. L.L.Henderson, Dallas; Mrs. Spencer Taylor, Van Alstyne, and Mrs. H.L.Davis, McKinney. James Carter Umphress 27 May 1914 - 6 May 1984 Van Alstyne Leader May 10, 1984 Services for James Carter Umphress, 69, were held Wednesday in Flesher Funeral Home with burial in Van Alstyne Cemetery. He died Sunday at his home. Services were conducted by the Rev. Johnny Irish of the First United Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. J.A. Moody and Robert E.B. Fielder. Mr. Umphress was born in Van Alstyne, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Umphress. He was an investor and a director of the First National Bank for 40 years, was a former member of the Van Alstyne School Board and a charter member of the Hurricane Creek Rotary Club. He was a member of and served on the board of the First United Methodist Church of Van Alstyne. Survivin are his wife, Mrs. Betty Umphress; daughter, Sonya Umphress of Van Alstyne; stepdaughters, Mrs. Peggy...and Mrs. Dianne Echols of van Alstyne; stepson, Johnny Horton of Magnolia, Miss.; and several step-grandchildren. OBITUARY PAGE Betty Jo (Jay) Umphress Van Alstyne - Betty Jo (Jay) Umphress peacefully went to be with
her Lord and Savior on June 24, 2003. She was the daughter of Walter
and Lillie Jay, born on June 9, 1928. She was a life-time resident
of Van Alstyne, and was very active in civic affairs. In 1980 she
became one of the first women to be elected to the Van Alstyne City Council.
She served as the first Mayor Pro Tem. Also, she was instrumental in helping to obtain the Wilson-McKinney Park. She always had an interest in young people and improving the quality of life in Van Alstyne. She was a cherished friend to many and will be missed. She always had an abundance of love and a sense of pride in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by a son, Johnny Horton and wife, Diane of Magnolia, Mississippi and daughters, Diane Echols and husband, George of Van Alstyne, Peggy Craig and husband, Jeff of Sherman and Sonya Umphress and fianc, Jimmy Majors of McKinney; six grandchildren, Ray Lynn Echols and wife, of Van Alstyne, Rev. Don Neill and wife, Darla of Sherman, Jason Neill of Van Alstyne, Matthew Echols of Van Alstyne, Cody Zachary and Nicholas Tanner of McKinney; five great-grandchildren, Nathan Neill of San Angelo, Natalie Neill of San Angelo, Chasen Neill, Sarah Echols and Selma Echols, all of Van Alstyne; one sister, Imogene Kerby of Sherman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carter Umphress; one sister, Bobby Arp; one brother, Choice Jay; and her parents. The Rev. Don Neill officiated at services held in the Flesher Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2003.
