George Thomas Bernhardt, 77, of Luella, Texas, passed away on January 6, 2018 at home. Rosary was lead by Deacon Albert Miller at 6 p.m. at Dannel Funeral Home in Sherman. A Funeral Mass was held Saturday, January 13 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Jimmy Myers celebrating the Mass and Rev. Antonio Aureus assisting. Burial followed at St. Mary's Cemetery. Arrangements were by Dannel Funeral Home. George was born in New York City, New York to Charles Walter Bernhardt and Virginia Ethel Christian on April 23, 1940. HE went to William Cullen Bryant High School in Astoria, New York. He married his pen-pal and soul mate Ann Dolores Tarr on October 15, 1960 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He was a jack of all trades, working as a carpenter, truck driver, painter and drill pressman. He served in the U.S. Army in Augsburg, Germany. He was involved in the Knights of Columbus #299 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, pitched for the Meade Street Aces in Perth Amboy, New Jersey and the Teamsters from Jersey City, New Jersey. George enjoyed working on racecars, Kawasaki motorcycles, tennis and music. George is survived by his wife of 57 years; son, George Thomas Bernhardt, Jr. and his wife, Pamela Diane; daughter Diane Barton and her husband, George; grandchildren, Lt. Christopher Barton of U.S. Air Force of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Sarah Elizabeth Bernhardt of Culpepper, Virginia; Ann Christian Barton of North Richland Hills; and George Bernhardt, III of Dallas. Cousin Alan Wetterhuus and wife, Linda, of Humble, Texas; brother-in-law, Valentine Tarr and wife, Ann, of Sayreville, New Jersey; brother-in-law, Steven Tarr, Sr. and wife, Lorraine, of Beaumont, California; nieces, Tiffany Tarr of Sayreville, New Jersey; Christine Tarr Chorba of Pasadena, California; Lola Tarr of Jackson, New Jersey; N.J. and Sophie Tarr of Guam. Nephews Valentine Tarr and wife, Amy, of Jackson, New Jersey; Commander Steven Tarr, Jr. of U.S. Navy and wife, Mary, from Guam; Alex Chorba of Pasadena, California; Lincoln Tarr of Jackson, New Jersey; and John Tarr of Guam. Pallbearers will be members of the St. Mary's Knights of Columbus. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grayson County Home Hospice, St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Mary's Catholic School or charity of your choice.
