Joseph J. Szalay 3 January 1919 - 3 October 2004

was born in Duquesne, Pennsylvania, the son of Joseph Szalay and Julia
Shimko Szalay. His parents came from Agad, Zemplain County of Hungary.
Joseph died at Wilson N Jones Medical Center, Sherman, Texas. Mr.
Szalay attended schools in Duquesne and worked in steel mills as an
apprentice in the forge shop before being drafted into military service. Joseph
served in the 102nd (Ozark) Infantry Division during World War II where
he was a division coordinator for field artillery. He served in
Germany from 1944-1945 in the Army Intelligence field because of his
knowledge of the Hungarian language. During this time his rank went
from Private to Chief Warrant Officer. While in the military he
married Miss Hazel Marie James in Paris, Texas on 4 April 1943, and the
couple settle in Paris upon his return. He worked for Texas Power and
Light Company for 35 years until his retirement in 1981. Joe and Marie moved to Sherman in 1960. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Parish;
Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus in Paris; member of the Lions
Club and the Sherman Barbershop Group. Joe authored "From Depression to
World War II". He was preceded in death by his parents, Sister
Olga, a son James Szalay who died in 1996 and a daughter Carolyn Jo
Nolan who died in 1999. Left to mourn his passing and celebrate
his life, he was survived by his wife Marie of Sherman; grandsons,
Jeffrey Patrick Nolan and his wife Lea and Michael Patrick Nolan;
great-grandson Parker Scott Nolan; brother, Elmer Szalay of Valparaiso,
Indiana; sisters, Emma Currie od Washington DC, Margaret Rembeckey of
Duquesne, Elsie Bren of Washington DC and numerous nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St Mary's Catholic Church, with pastor Rev. Jeremy Myers officiating. Pallbearers
were Newman Neely, L.A. Seitz, Al Vrla, Wayne Raney, Woody Woodruff and

Marie James was born to Jessie James and Laura Gordon in Paris, Texas.
She passed away from this earth at The Willows in Sherman, Texas. In
April 1943, she married the love of her life Joseph J. Szalay while he
was stationed at Camp Maxey, Paris. They settled in Paris upon his
return from serving his country in World War II. After raising their
two children, Joe and Marie moved to Sherman in 1960, where they were
active members of St. Mary's Catholic Parish. Marie
was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters, her
husband, her son, James Szalay, and her daughter, Carolyn Jo Nolan. She
is survived by her grandsons Michael Patrick Nolan, Jeffrey Scott Nolan
and wife Lea, great-grandson Parker Scott Nolan, niece Claudia James
and nephew, Larry James of Phoenix. Mass of the Christian Burial
will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Thursday, August 23, 2012
at 10:30 am, Father Antonio Aureus of St. Mary's Catholic Parish will
officiate. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Dannel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. | James E. Szalay 10 December 1947 - 13 March 1996

was born in Paris, Texas the son of Joseph J. and Marie James Szalay.
He died at the Columbia Medical Center, Sherman, Texas. He was a graduate of Sherman High School and was employed by the Texas Highway Department and Grayson County College. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Parish in Sherman. He
is survived by his parents of Sherman; a sister, Carolyn Nolan of
Allen, Texas; a nephew, Jeffrey Scott and his wife Lea Nolan. Rosary was recited by Deacon John LeBlanc of St. Mary's Catholic Church at Dannel Funeral Home in Sherman. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Reverend Jeremy Myers, Pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Parish. |
