Father Haberman
was born in Tioga, Texas, the son of Rudolph and Elenora (Reicherd) Haberman. He
graduated as Valedictorian of Henrietta High School, Texas.
Following
high school he served in the military in China during World War II. After the
war, he attended Texas A&M University, graduating with a degree in
agriculture. After graduation he taught school in Goree, Texas.
Following
a brief job with the U.S. Government, he entered Pope John XXIII National
Seminary, in Weston, Massachusetts. He was ordained on May 11, 1968 at St
Thomas Parish in Pilot Point, Texas. Thereafter, he served at St Anthony's
Church in Longview, St John's Church in Ennis, and Good Sheppard Church in
Garland, all in Texas. After his retirement, he moved to Sherman, Texas and was
a member of St Mary's Catholic Church where he continued to assist in
ministry.
Father Haberman was a fun-loving person. He loved music and
played piano in a local band. He began playing the piano before he started
school, and he loved to play at dances as a youth.
Father Haberman was
survived by his mother, of Sherman; a sister, Marie Walston of Sherman; a
brother, Clarence Haberman and his wife, Marie of Henrietta; four nephews and
three nieces.
A Rosary was held at St. Mary’s Catholic
Church. Mass of Christian Burial was also held at the church, Bishop
Charles V. Grahmann of the Catholic Diocese of Dallas officiating, assisted by
Father Jeremy Myers, pastor of St Mary's. Pallbearers’ were members of the
Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. Burial follow at St. Mary's
Cemetery.
In lieu of
flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. Mary’s Building
Fund.
