Speed 19 March 1890 - 9 January 1985 James Charlton Speed 24 October 1912 - 31 October 1937 The Denison Press Monday, November 1, 1937 pg. 1 MURDER CHARGES ARE FILED AGAINST MAN; BROTHER DEAD Murder charges were filed against A.M. Speed, farmer in the justice court of Judge E.A. Wright Sunday following the death of Charlton Speed during a brother fight southeast of Denison late Saturday afternoon. A.M. Speed, 30, is alleged to have slain his brother, 25, during an altercation at the former's home near Star school after A.M. had ordered Charlton off his property. According to Judge Wright, Charlton had come to A.M.'s home and was slightly drunk. A.M. ordered his brother off the place following an exchange of words. Charlton was said to have picked up a metal scale piece and started toward his older brother. Fearing self harm, A.M. is alleged to have grabbed a grubbing hoe handle and hit his brother on the head. Charlton died shortly afterwards. Following the fight, Speed came in to Denison and gave himself up to Constable Ira Jessee. A preliminary hearing set for Monday morning was held over until Tuesday at 10:30 when the defense lawyers were unable to appear. Speed was born in Grayson County, October 24, 1912 to Mr. and Mrs. J. Speed and received his education in the South Gale community. He married Miss Dorothy Turley November 21, 1936 at Denison. Surviving are his parents; widow; one brother, Alton of South Gale; and 3 sisters, Ruth Trimm of Denison; Lois Craft of Goldenville; and Gover Speed of Denison. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 at the Shannon church. Interment was at Shannon cemetery with George Shields directing. Speed, South Gale farmer, charged with the murder of his brother, Charlton, during an argument at the former's home Saturday afternoon, was bound over to the Grand Jury under a $1,500 bond in a preliminary hearing before Judge E.A. Wright today. Speed was allowed the small bond after Judge Wright deliberated over a request of District Attorney R.C. Slagle, Jr. that the case be made unbailable.
