A THRILLING EXPERIENCE
Monday morning, probably around 4 o'clock,
Miss Rosebud Dilling, who is a visitor to
the family of C.L. Deffenback, Sears street,
discovered a Negro at her bedside who place
a large knife at her throat, telling her if
she made the least alarm that he would cut
her throat. The young lady was lying
on her right arm. She attempted to
...her arm when he again presented the knife
to her throat. With a desperate
resolve she grappled with him and screamed.
Mr. Deffenback heard her cries and
went to the rescue. The negro, hearing
his voice, sprang through the open window
and escaped.
There was a wire screening such as used for
chicken yards, covered with vines a short
distance from the window. This was
partially broken down. He then broke
off a limb and forced the screen window and
climbed into the room. The young lady
describes the Negro as powerfully built.
There is no doubt he intended violence
and the wonder is that he did not stab her
when she made the outcry.
