Henry Thomas, at one time connected with
the Texas
Labor Siftings, of this city and
later editor and proprietor of the Twin City
Topics of McAlester, I.T., has
been adjudged insane and will be forwarded
to the asylum at Terrell. Mr. Thomas
sold out the Topics several months
since and returned to Denison.
Two or 3 weeks ago he was taken ill and
Dr. Bailey was called. Symptoms of
insanity were noticed at that time but it
was thought to be temporary. His
condition, however, gradually grew worse
and Monday he developed into a violent
maniac. Monday evening, by request
of family and physician, he was placed in
custory of the officers and
confined.
Tuesday Judge Gregg, of the county court,
came over and Mr. Thomas was given a jury
trial, the verdict being guilty as
charged. He appeared in court in
person and talked quite intelligently but
his appearance was that of a man without
reason. In response to
questions by the judge, he stated that he
was 27 years of age, was born in Missouri,
at times was troubled with severe pain in
his side and head. He further stated
that he was perfectly conscious of
everything going on but at times he was
very nervous. He did not know that
that was sufficient cause to render him
non-compas mentis.
