Saturday May 5, 1906 pg 1 BECAME VIOLENTLY INSANE P. J. STOUT ATTACKED HIS WIFE WHILE MENTALLY DERANGED Fled from House and Is Captured by Officers in Dining Room of the Denison Hotel. P. J. Stout, a car repairer at the Katy shops, who lives at No. 404 West Monterey street, became suddenly deranged early this morning, and is now lying in the city jail violently insane, while his wife is suffering from slight injuries inflicted by him in his first moments of insanity. Mr. Stout was struck on the head by a bolt while on duty in the shops last fall, and as he has not been well lately it is thought he is suffering from the effects of the blow. Mrs. Stout was awakened this morning about 2 o'clock by the frantic actions of her husband. She lighted a lamp and tried to quiet him, but he knocked over the lamp, setting fire to the bed. He attacked her and would have probably seriously injured her if she had not fled from his presence. Her cries brought a neighbor to her assistance, but nothing could be done against the strength and madness of the unfortunate man. An alarm was turned in to the fire station and police headquarters. Before help could be summoned in numbers, the insane man rushed from his home in his night clothes, coming to Main street and frightening people along the way. Reaching the Denison Hotel, he rushed through the office into the dining room, closing the door. Here he remained till officers arrived on the scene. He was taken into custody by Policemen Poff and Zeigler and Deputy Sheriff Newt Layne. He resisted arrest with great strength, it taking several men to hold him. He was slightly bruised on the arms and hands in rushing through doorways. The fire at his home was put out before the arrival of the fire company. Mrs. Stout was considerably injured about the face and eyes, though her injuries are not considered serious. Mr. and Mrs. Stout have one child, a son, who was at home at the time, but not injured. ![]() The Denison Daily Herald Monday May 8, 1906 pg 3 IN THE COURTS A. B.
