RAILROAD RUMBLINGS
The
Gazetteer heard a singular story
recently and heard it straight.
Passenger conductor John Hill was
"let out" on the Katy about 12 years ago.
From that time until he became
insane, he never despaired of being
re-instated. It was the one object
of his life. The mental worry
unhinged his mind and drove him crazy.
John Hill was freight and passenger
conductor on the Katy out of Denison for
about 18 years. When he lost his
position, he was well-to-do, worth not
less than $40,000. He retired to a
farm near Dennis, Kansas, but was never
satisfied with his lot. The building
at present occupied by Wells Fargo Express
Co. is his property.
