July 14, 1920, Mrs. Tennie Morris shot and
killed Mrs. Leater "Lela"
Smothers Farrar on the corner of Main Street
and Rusk Avenue. On March
1, 1921, a Denison taxi driver testified at
Mrs. Morris' trial that the
victim had a "bad reputation." A jury of 12
men deliberated for less
than an hour before acquitting the defendant
on grounds of "unwritten
law."
