Bill O'Neal Given Ten
Years
Sherman, Sept. 12 -
Bill O'Neal pleaded guilty today in the 59th
District Court to a
charge of incest and was given the limit, 10
years in the state
penitentiary, by the jury. This case
went to trial yesterday and the defendant at that
time pleaded not guilty. The complaining witness was the
defendant's daughter, Lena O'Neal, and she went on the witness stand and
testified that her father had mistreated her in the manner set out
in the indictment for a period covering 10 years. This
morning, after this testimony had been placed before the jury, the plea was
changed.
O'Neal at one time was
constable of the Whitesboro precinct.
He had been engaged in
farming for some time, and has been
successful in his efforts.
He has been in jail
about 2 months, never having attempted to
give bond since he was
arrested on the indictment to which he today
plead guilty.
Bill O'Neal accepted
sentence which was passed on him by Judge M.H. Garnett this afternoon.
