Murder of a Platte County Man.
Particulars of the killing of Captain Jack
Archer.
The Sherman (Texas) Patriot gives the
following account of the killing of Capt Jack
Archer, formerly of Platte County.
On last Wednesday, four miles north of
Whitesboro, in this county Capt. Jack Archer,
(who was acting constable in place of J L
Hall, now absent at Huntsville, with convicts
which he took from this county), was shot and
killed instantly by Harvey Adams, of that
vicinity. It appears that a few days previous,
Capt Archer had arrested Adams near that place
for carrying pistols, and one Corhorne had
attempting to rescue him from the constable,
but failed. On Wednesday last Capt Archer
arrested Corhorne for attempting to rescue
Adams previously, and also for carrying deadly
weapons, when Adams came to the relief of
Corhorne and had to rescue him from the
officer, which he resisted, and was shot and
killed by Adams.
Capt Archer had lost his right arm in the
Confederate service, and only his left arm
with which to manage his horse and defend
himself.
A large posse of citizens (about 30) are out
with Deputy Sheriff Caywood in pursuit of
Adams, but we have not up to the present
writing heard the result.
The above facts we get from Sheriff Hunter.
Since the above was put in type, we learn that
Capt Archer was not on his horse when shot,
but was coming out from dinner, when fired
upon by Adams; he then got on his horse and
rode to the creek close by, dismounted, and
was found dead , sitting with his feet in the
water.

Capt Jack Archer, well known to many
Missourians in this country, (A brother of
Col. Thornton's wife, of Deer Lodge) a
Confederate hero, who lost his right arm in
battle--was recently killed by a desperado at
Sherman, Texas, while in the discharge of
official duty.
We have known Jack Archer from childhood, and
no more brave or honorable man ever lived.
