The Republic of Texas : Poll Lists for 1846 by Marion Day Mullins Texas gained its
independence from Mexico in 1836. The Republic of
Texas Legislature established a system of
taxation. However, the state of Texas,
deeply in debt, established In the year 1846 a
"poll" tax of $1.00 which was applied to every
white male resident over the age of 21 and to
women who were heads of households, these
were usually widows. The population
for the state was approximately 145,000 with
97% being Americans. When making the tax
rolls, the county assessor was to prepare two
sets of the alphabetical copies from his
original list. One went to the State
Treasure and one to the Sheriff of the county
who made the collections.
