MRS. WENDELL IS 100 YEARS YOUNG
Mrs. Edna Wendell celebrated her
100th birthday last Friday at the
Whitewright Nursing Home. She
is the oldest resident of the home.
Mrs. Wendell was born July 31, 1870
in Pilot Grove, a community south of
Whitewright. She married the
late W.T. Wendell in Pilot Grove in
1887 and lived there most of her
life. Wendell was a Grayson
County educator.
She is the daughter of the late Mr.
and Mrs. Joe Worden and her parents
came from Virginia. Mrs.
Wendell has one son, L.L. Wendell,
of Whitewright; three grandchildren,
three great-grandchildren and three
great-great-grandchildren.
Another son, Cecil Wendell,
passed away a number of years ago.
Mrs. Wendell is a member of the
Bethel Baptist Church. She
still reads without glasses and
newspapers are her favorite reading.
The last few years, she had to
give up her hobby of knitting.
She still retains a keen sense
of humor and although unable to
walk, she can take her own meals and
do various things for herself.
She attributes her long life to hard
work and clean living. She
notes that she never smoked or
dipped snuff.
All members of the home who
celebrated birthdays in July were
honored at Friday's party. A
decorated cake was served with
favors presented the honorees by the
nurses.
Bob Cayce, editor of the Sun, took
1915 issues of the paper and the
residents enjoyed looking through
the pages.
