Thursday, July 19, 1900 pg. 4 AN ABANDONED INFANT Brought Into Sherman on the Cotton Belt Yesterday. When the 4:55 Cotton Belt passenger train reached the Sherman depot yesterday evening, A message was sent to police headquarters for an officer to come down. Officer Parsons answered the message, and too charge of a bundle which, when investigated, proved to be an astonisher, so to speak. It was a little boy baby, probably a month old, perfectly nude, except as to the cloth wrapped around it, and showing evidence of neglect, so far as cleanliness was concerned. The infant was taken to the residence of Mrs. O. S. Argo, on East Jones street, who volunteered to give it attention. Mrs. Argo had it bathed and dressed it, and then it was taken to the county hospital and placed in the care of Superintendent Freeman. Conductor Mockby states that a woman, supposed to be the mother of the child, entered the train at Commerce and left it at Whitewright. The officers here have a clue and think that the mystery will be unraveled in a short time. Sherman Daily Register Tuesday, July 24, 1900 pg. 4 THAT BABY The little baby boy deserted on a Cotton Belt passenger train last week is still at the county hospital, and is thriving under the good attention given by kindly disposed strangers. The mother's home is not far from Sulphur Springs, in Hopkins county. She is a young woman not far from eighteen years of age. The father of the child is her brother-in-law. It is learned that he has departed for more congenial environments, at the suggestion of male relatives of the girl, backed up by divers and sundry dark-mouthed guns. Sherman Daily Register Wednesday, July 25, 1900 pg. 4 BABY HAS A GOOD HOME And a Name of Which It May Be Proud. The little waif which practically began life in a Cotton Belt railway coach has fallen into good hands, and as it is healthy and a find little fellow, promises to grow up to manhood with many things to be thankful for, notwithstanding the unpromising outlook at the beginning of its life. Mrs. J. L. Doyle of Denison, accompanied by a visitor, Miss Jennie Wainscott of Kentucky, came to Sherman this morning, and after a conference with Judge Woods, adopted the little mite of humanity and returned to Denison this evening. After all formalities had been completed, the question of a name for the youngster was a matter of much concern to Mrs. Doyle, especially as her daughters, Mrs. J. D. Nolan and Miss Doyle, had charged her particularly to bring it home complete in all respects - name and all. So after much discussion and no little badinage, nomen and cognomen were selected, and the youngster will go down to History as Jim Woods Doyle. Mrs. Doyle has reared other children by adoption as well as her own, and being one of God's best creatures - a big hearted, womanly woman- with ample wealth, they have gone forth to rise up and call her blessed.
