  W.A. Bates 1856 - 1942 The Whitewright Sun
Thursday, December 10, 1942 pg. 5 Funeral services for Wm. H. Bates [sic], 86, who died last Thursday morning, were held at the Cross Roads Presbyterian Church Friday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. E.B. Jackson and Rev. J.A. Henderson, with interment following in the Pilot Grove Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were in charge of Glen Earnheart. Mr. Bates came from Tennessee to Texas 41 years ago. For many years he operated a general store at Desert, 8 miles south of Whitewright. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Bates is survived by his wife; one brother, Jesse Bates of Marian, Indiana; 2 sisters, Mrs. Visie Helton and Mrs. Abbie Bugle of Nashville, Tennessee.
