Whitewright, Texas - Maurice "Smokey" Cate, 83, passed away March 16, 2017 at his home in Pilot Grove, Texas.
Smokey was born March 28, 1933 in Altoga, Texas, son of Homer and May Cate; the family moved to Van Alstyne in 1936 where he graduated from Van Alstyne High School in 1951.  He entered the U.S. Army in March 1953, being stationed at White Sands Proving Grounds after his basic training where he continued to serve until his Honorable Discharge in March 1955.  He then attended University of North Texas and earned a Bachelor of Science degree.  He was a farmer and rancher as well as a transport truck driver for Jack Cooper for 20 years, retiring in 1995.  He and his family are members of King's Trail Cowboy Church.
Smokey is survived by his wife of 63 years, Foy Jean; son Maurice N. Cate, II and wife Jennifer; daughters, Tanja Jones and husband, Rube; Candy Eddins and husband, James; Misti Trapp and husband, Bryan.  Grandchildren Cheyenne, Sierra and Laira Cate; Sammie Hicks, Hadley Whiting Addison and Tyler Trapp. Great-grandchildren: Rylee, Landri, and Macy Hicks; Miranda and Hayes Whiting.  Sisters: Ruby Noel and husband, Murle; Dorothy Baker and Mildred Parker.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Doris Burkett; brother, Charles Cate; and grandchild, Baby Boy Eddins.
Services were held Monday, March 20, 2017 at King's Trail Cowboy Church in Whitewright.  Pastor Jason Norton and Pastor John Brock officiated, with burial following in Pilot Grove Cemetery.
