Leo S. Cameron

It is with deep regret that the family of Frances Cameron, 84, advise of her transitioning to eternal life October 10, 2020.  She was at home surrounded by family and friends.  She was born July 19, 1936 to Neil McCloud and Duressie Amelia Smith McCloud.  She married Leo Samuel Cameron, Jr. on April 6, 1963; to this union were born Reginald Eugene and Derrick Leon Cameron.  Member of Hopewell Baptist Church all of her life serving in the Choir and as a pianist and Director of Music.  She graduated from Terrell High School, Denison, Texas Prairie A&M University, Prarie View, Texas, with a Masters in Music and Education.
Mrs. Cameron was an educator in Denison ISD for 32 years.  Before integration Mrs. Cameron taught 3rd and 4th grade at Langstone Elementary School for 5 years.  From 1964 to 1973, she taught at Layne Elementary School.  She finished her career as a 3rd grade teacher at Houston Elementary School, serving for 20 years.
Mrs. Cameron also became the first African American woman to serve on the Denison Independent School District Board of Trustees, representing Ward 1 for 18 years.  Mrs. Cameron is the longest serving Board member in the history of Denison ISD, per district officials.  For most of her years of service, Mrs. Cameron was the only woman on the Board during her tenure.  She always made decisions that would be best for the students.  Mrs. Cameron took pride as a Board member saying, "We did what's best for our kids so that they could become productive citizens then they would make the right decisions when they became eligible to run for the Board."  Mrs. Cameron said, "They are proud to be Yellow Jackets."
Mrs. Cameron had many accomplishments:  9-years Board member for Texoma Educators Federal Credit Union; State of Texas Dream Maker Award from Business Professional Women's Club; Texas teacher of the year.
Left to cherish her memories are her son, Reggie & Shatera; grandsons, Samuel & Landus Cameron; son, Derrick and Dana Cameron; grandsons, Njeri and Khari Cameron.  Cousins: Evelyn Chandler, Beverly Anderson; and aunt, Clara Cosby.
Frances was preceded in death by her mother Duressie Amelia Smith and father Neil McCloud; and husband, Leo Samuel Cameron.
Graveside services followed visitation on Saturday, October 17, 2020 in Oakwood Cemetery at noon Saturday.

Reginald was born March 17, 1965, son of Leo S. and Frances M. Cameron.  He married Shaterra M. Rutherford on June 3, 2000; to this union was born Landus Mykal and Samuel Lexton Cameron.  Reggie was a lifetime member of Hopewell Baptist Church serving as a Deacon, pulpit usher, male chorus, kitchen committee and regularly attended Bible study.  Reginald graduated from Denison High School.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife; his sons; brothers, Derrick (Dana) Cameron; and Leo (Evelyn) Cameron, Jr.; sister, Camille (Marvin) Lane; cousins, Evelyn Chandler; and Beverly Anderson; Aunt Clara Cosby; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and grandmother, Duressie Amelia Smith.
Reginald ascended to his eternal home Monday, December 7, 2020 at Texoma Medical Center in Denison, Texas at age 55, following a short illness.
Graveside rites were held at Oakwood Cemetery, Denison with Rev. C.E. Evans officiating at noon Saturday, December 12, 2020.
