Anna Stueber born 5 December 1889 Aged 4 Yrs. 11 Mos. & 18 Days d/o H. & H. Stueber The Sunday Gazetteer Sunday, June 6, 1897 pg 4 BULLET THROUGH HIS BRAIN Herman Stueber Meets Death in the Vorwaertz Hall. Depressed by financial trouble, death cancelled all and gave Herman Steuber a clean receipt Thursday afternoon. About 4 p.m. Thursday Levi Burton, the colored porter, discovered the body of Stueber lying on a mattress in the Vorwaertz hall on the first floor. There was a ghastly wound in the right side of the head, a pistol ball having passed entirely through the brain. The weapon had fallen from the suicide's hand and was lying on his breast. Burton immediately notified Mayor Lebrecht, who, in company with officers and Justice Pearson, repaired to the scene of the tragedy. About 10 o'clock Thursday a solicitor of the Gazetteer visited the Casino and requested an advertisement of Stueber. He said "no business; don't talk to me about business; I am doing not business." Stueber seemed depressed, and was very nervous. In a few minutes he left the Casino (his place of business) and requested the loan of the keys to the Vorwaertz hall. This was the last seen of him until the grewsome discovery by the negro porter Burton. Stueber had left two messages written with a piece of chalk in German: "Friends, take care of my wife and children; "good bye, and "I want my funeral to be as small as possible." Stueber came to Denison about ten years ago, and was a musician by profession. He has conducted the Casion about two years. He was thirty-three years of age. He was a member of the society Vorwaerts and Sons of Herman. In the last lodge his wife will receive $1000 insurance. He has a wife and two children to mourn his untimely end. He was buried Friday under the auspices of the Sons of Herman and the Vorwaertz, the interment being at Oakwood cemetery. OAKWOOD CEMETERY
