HEALTH OF THE CITY ...The
first death which attracted attention by the peculiarity of symptoms,
was that of Mr. Perry. His death was followed by two in the
Kansas City House on Crawford Street Sunday morning. Since then
five more deaths have taken place of persons who were living or
boarding at that house, and all these seven were afflicted in the same
manner. A few cases with like s symptoms have occurred in other
localities in the city. We should note that most of these cases
reported were persons intemperate in their habits. The Board of
Health report only twelve deaths from all causes since Saturday.
The vicinity of the Kansas City House was discovered on
inspection to be filthy in the extreme, and the well water used by the
occupants is said to be very impure. In the opinion of the Board
nearly all the sickness reported as cholera had its origin from the
impurities allowed to accumulate in that locality....

CATHOLIC CHURCH FOUNDED HERE IN CITY'S FIRST YEAR
While
Texas was still a sparsely settled prairie and Denison was in her
swaddling clothes, St. Patrick's Catholic Church was established in
1872 by Bishop C. M. LeBois of the Galveston Diaciese with Father
Martievere, a missionary, as the first pastor.
In
the spring of 1873, the first church building was erected and in 187-,
the second edifice was constructed under the pastorate of Rev.
Francis Derue...
The
first burial was recorded in 1873 when John Perry, born in 1845, was
interred in Oakwood Cemetery. The second was that of T. D. Moriarty,
23, a Federal veteran of the Civil War. . .

The following items are from the Denison News of Friday: We
are pained to announce the sudden and unexpected death of Mr. John
Perry, which occurred in this city Thursday morning from congestive
chill. Mr.
Perry was brother of E. Perry, Esq., Vice-President of the First
National Bank, and also of Joe Perry, the attorney. He had been
engaged in the bank some time as bookkeeper. He was a native of
Canada and 28 years of age - a young man of excellent attainments and
of a genial and social nature, which endeared him to all with whom he
came in contact. | John Perry 10 March 1845 - 23 September 1873

Perry
- Charles Ernest, son of Edward and Melanie Perry, aged 2 years, 11
months and 20 days, at the family residence, February 25, 1877.
Our
pen shrinks from the duty before it. How can it trespass upon the
home circle, bowed down with a most sacred sorrow, and tell to the
world this bitter bereavement. A father or mother alone can only
realize this affliction - can realize how father and mother watched the
little one sink into the arms of death, unable to stay his cold
embrace. Mr. E. Perry, the bereaved father, is the head of a most
interesting family; is domestic and very fond of his children, of which
Charles Ernest was one of the brightest. At the early age of 3
years he had shown great precocity. Only a few days ago he was
the very picture of health; that fatal disease, membranous croup, did
its work rapidly. Mortal hand could do nothing.
When the earth
looks bright and beautiful and we are surrounded with all the joys and
comforts of life; when nothing seems to be wanting to make our
happiness complete - some great sorrow swoops down upon us unannounced
and terrible. Such is the lot of mortals. It must be, as it
is His will, and it keeps our thoughts and minds from the great joys
and greatest sorrows of this life to Him for strength.
What a
blessed, cheering promise He has given us - "Suffer little children to
come unto Me, for such is the Kingdom of God." This stricken
family, this father, this mother, these brothers and sisters have
this blessed promise in this hour of trial, and they know that little
Charlie is just over there "of the Kingdom of God." Taken away
before he has been tainted or tarnished with the sins of this world;
before he had learned the bitterness of this world, while he was yet
"of the little children" who, Christ tells us, people the "Kingdom of
God." Father, mother, brothers and sisters will all be united
over there. Charlie is waiting and watching.
