Denison Section 2 Charles Bennett 15 September 1863 - 11 September 1888 h/o Lottie Bennett "Died from injuries of the Burleson bridge wreck" The Sunday Gazetteer Sunday, September 16, 1888 pg. 6 A fatal wreck occurred on the Fort Worth division of the Missouri Pacific Tuesday, at the Burleson Tank. A north bound freight, pulled by engine No. 130 attempted to cross the bridge at that point. When the engine was well on the bridge, the structure gave way, and the engine and one freight car was precipitated into the gorge some twenty feet below. Engineer Benj. Schultz and Fireman Charley Bennett, both Denison men, had charge of the engine, and went down with the wreck. Both were injured - Schultz slightly though painfully and Bennett fatally. Bennett's legs were crushed to a pulp, and he was otherwise fearfully injured. Schultz was bruised badly, but no bones were broken, and itis thought he will soon be able to resume his position. The wounded men were taken to the Fort Worth railroad hospital, where they were attended by Drs. Derringer, Burt and McKenzie. Bennett's legs had to be amputated. The shock proved too great, and he died at six o'clock in the evening. His body was brought to this city Wednesday morning. His funeral took place the same afternoon, from his residence on Day street. Services at the Episcopal Church by Rev. N.F. Atkin, thence to Oakwood Cemetery. In talking among the railroad boys a Gazetteer man learned that Bennett was considered a good man, and his late associates refer to him kindly. He leaves a widow and one child, to whom the Gazetteer extends its sympathy, together with that of its readers. OAKWOOD CEMETERY
