PASSED AWAY
Death and Funeral of Mr. Henry Schoeneman

Our citizens were shocked and surprised to learn of the death of Mr. Henry Schoeneman, proprietor of the Narrow Gauge restaurant, which occurred at his residence on Woodard street Monday morning at the hour of 7 o'clock.
He had been unwell for nearly a week but had been able to be up the most of the time, and was walking about the house a few minutes before his death.  The disease from which he diedis pronounced by the doctors as asthenia.
Henry Schoeneman was born in Germany, March 16th, 1841, and was consequently 45 years and 2 months old at the time of his death.  He came to America at the age of 14 and made his way to St. Louis where he was married and where he resided for 20 years.  Four years ago he followed the star of empire westward and landed in Denison on the 27th of April in time to take charge of the kitchen of the McDougall Hotel, then just being opened.  He was a cook of the first order of merit, and during his ten months stay with the management, laid the foundation of that reputation for high culinary excellance which that establishment has ever since enjoyed.  At the end of this time, he purchased the Narrow Gauge restaurant, which he quickly erected into the most successful restaurant business in the city, and which he has conducted ever since.
He was a genial and popular host, a competent businessman and an excellent citizen, and in his death the city loses an honorable and respected resident and the bereaved family a good and loving husband and father.  He leaves a disconsolate widow and three beautiful little daughters to mourn his departure.
The funeral took place from the family residence on Woodard street Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock and was attended by a very large concourse of sorrowing friends.  Messrs. Beirne, Garrett, Burkell, Collins, Porter and Tobin were the pall-bearers who walked beside the hearse as it wended its way solemnly towards Oakwood Cemetery.
At the grave an interesting funeral oration was delivered by Mr. L. Lebrecht, president of the Vorwaerts society, and all that was mortal of Henry Schoeneman was consigned to its eternal rest.
