Denison The Sunday Gazetteer Sunday, September 21, 1902 pg. 2 Chas. Rone Murdered Charles Rone, a fireman on the Katy, was found dead in the alley between Main and Chestnut street Sunday morning. Rone, who had been in company with a party of young men, had been drinking. He was conducted to his home by a brother but returned down town. At 4 o'clock in the morning he called at the Bell Top saloon and requested the loan of a quarter of Happy Jack. At that time he was intoxicated. Happy advised him to go home. He remarked that he borrowed the money to get something to eat. A young man by the name of Hardwick, who has been behind the bar at the Antler's saloon was in company with Rone when he called at the Bell Top saloon. He denies any connection with the unfortunate affair. He was arrested and lodged in jail. The first to discover the body of Rone were two Negroes. It is possible that Rone fell and accidentally killed himself. There are other theories that he was drugged and dragged to the alley. The body lay in the alley til 8 o'clock awaiting the arrival of Justice of the Peace W.T. Cutler, who was sent for to view the remains and hold an inquest. Rone was raised in Denison. His parents reside at No. 230 West Morgan street. At the time of death he was 22 years of age. He was buried Monday forenoon at Oakwood cemetery. OAKWOOD CEMETERY
