Denison The Denison Press Friday, February 8, 1946 Pg. 1 DEPUTY PAINTER FOUND IN DYING CONDITION AT HOME AFTER FATAL SHOT Denison learned with regret early Thursday morning of the tragic death of Barney Painter, local deputy sheriff, and former car salesman and groceryman, which occurred in the family home at 1212 W. Walker street. Mr. Painter had just eaten his meal with the family as usual at the evening hour and the family were sitting together. On hearing the shot, Mrs. Painter made an immediate investigation and found her husband on the kitchen floor in a dying condition. He was rushed to the Madonna hospital but the .38 calibre revolver had done its work. Judge M.M. Scholl conducted the inquest. Police state that Mr. Painter was sitting in the home with his wife and married daughter and granddaughter Wednesday evening, when he arose unceremoniously, entered an adjoining room, and soon afterward the family he had just left heard a shot ring out. On entering the room, the wife and daughter found him in a dying condition. Friends are at a lose to place a motive for the act as Mr. Painter was always congenial and his relations in every way so far as known were of the most pleasant kind. His health had not been the best for the past several months, it is declared. Mr. Painter was married to Miss Ethel Covington of Denison July 23, 1911. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and the Masonic Order. Services were conducted Friday morning at Bratcher-Moore Funeral home with interment at Oakwood. Rev. Cyrus Barcus of the Waples Memorial Church officiated. Surviving are his widow; a son, Harry L. Painter, who recently returned from overseas; a daughter, Mrs. Sybil Pruett and Mrs. W.J. Cockrell, all of Denison. OAKWOOD CEMETERY
