Denison The Denison Press Tuesday, May 7, 1935 pg. 1 LAST OF LOCAL CIVIL WAR VETS GETS TAPS SHERMAN HOSPITAL WAS IN CICKAMAUGU BATTLE Robert M. Burns, probably the last of the Civil War veterans in North Texas, died at 6:45 a.m. Tuesday at Sherman. Mr. Burns, who was in his ninety-fifth year, resided in Denison for many years prior to moving to Sherman a year ago. He was a retired carpenter. Mr. Burns was born September 26, 1840, in Alabama and attended school in that state and in Texas where he came at the age of 18. He enlisted in the Eighteenth Texas Cavalry and participated in the battle of Cickamaugu and later in Indian fights in Texas. Mr. Burns married Miss Mary Jane Williams at Bells. Mrs. Burns died in 1915. Mr. Burns was a member of the Masons and of the Baptist church. Surviving are two sons, A.G. Burns of Chicago and Leo Burns of Denison; one step-daughter, Henryetta Johnson of Denison; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Shield's chapel. Burns, former Indian fighter and Civil War veteran, were held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Shields' funeral chapel. Burial was at Oakwood Cemetery. Burns served in the Eighteenth Texas Cavalry in General Hood's brigade during the war between the states and was probably the last veteran of the Confederacy in North Texas. Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars acted as pall bearers. OAKWOOD CEMETERY
