![]() Denison ![]() Strangers Burial Ground The Sunday Gazetteer Sunday, August 19, 1894 pg. 4 RAILROAD RUMBLINGS A fatal accident occurredat the Main street corssing of the Katy at 7 o'clock Tuesday evening. A caboose and 2 or 3 freight cars were being backed through the yards, when a white man carrying a b undle was seen struggling across the tracks. The flagman shouted to him as did the brakeman, but the warnings either did not reach him or came too late. A caboos s truck him and dragged him 20 f eet before the train could be stopped. His head was badly lacerated, one foot mashed and he received internal injuries of a fatal c haracter. He gave the name of John Williams, but was unable to tell where he comes from. Dr. Acheson was immediately summoned and t he wounded man was c onveyed, first to the freight depot and then to the O.K. restaurant, 110 Main street. At 8:40 o'clock he q uietly closed his eyes and the attendants supposed he had fallen asleep. Dr. Acheson held the hand of the wounded man and, without a murmur or a struggle the pulse sank, softer and softer and then all was over. The remains were removed to the undertaking house of I. Lindsey and, during the morning Wednesday quite a large number o f people called. The body, however, was not recognized and Wednesday evening it was interred in Oakwood cemetery. Just after he was knocked down he stated that his name w as John Williams and that he had worked on a Katy section. He carried a small bundle of clothing, and from their appearance he must have been a miner. LOCAL CONDENSATIONS Wednesday, August 14 - The remains of John Williams, the miner, knocked down and killed last evening on Main street crossing, were interred this evening in the Stranger's burial ground in Oakwood Cemetery. ![]() OAKWOOD CEMETERY
