The Sunday Gazetteer
Sunday, December 13, 1891

Thursday morning between the hours of 9 and 10 o'clock Deacon W.H. Holmes quietly closed his eyes in that sleep which, so far as mortals can know, has no ending.  Tuesday he was up and about his business as usual, and, although in his 74th years, his mental and physical activity was superior to many men from 20 to 30 years his junior.  His home of nativity was in the country a few miles from Monticello, Jasper county, Georgia, the same neighborhood in which the illustrious Benjamin H. Hill first saw the light of day.  Mr. Holmes came to Texas immediately following the close of the war, and resided at Ladonia, Fannin county, until his removal to Denison, 12 years ago.  He filled the office of deacon in the Baptist church for over 50 years, but at the time of his death, stood as an excluded member from the Denison Baptist church.  His exclusion, however, was the result of a conflict with the ruling element of the church with reference to doctrine.
Funeral services were held at the family residence, No. 1222 West Gandy street, Friday evening, and his remains were interred in Oakwood.
