Denison POTTER'S FIELD The Denison Press Saturday, June 5, 1937 pg. 1 DENISON 62-50-35 Years Ago By Dulce Murray June 5, 1875 - The cemetery committee appointed a few nights ago has made the following apportionment of the cemetery grounds, on the basis of 10 acres; to the Portestant societies, together, 4 acres; Catholics, 2 acres; Israelites, 1 acre; Masons and Odd Fellows, eacah 1/2 acre; negroes, 1 acres; and 1 acre for a potter's field. Four years later the Hebrew Mutual Relief Association petititoned the City Council for two acres in the (then) northeast corner of the cemetery be set aside for the burial of their faith. The motion by Councilman Boss was made and granted. Four years after the 1875 apportionment that designated one acre for Potter's Field, a motion carried at a City Council meeting to purchase an additional tract of land south of the cemetery to be used as a potter's field. The Denison Daily News Tuesday, June 17, 1879 pg. 4 It was moved by Councilman Boss that a certain tract of land south of the cemetery be purchased by the city for a potter's field. The amount of purchase money to be applied on payment of taxes due the city by the owners of said land, and that the mayor appoint a committee of 3 to make the necessary arrangements and report at the next meeting.
