Charlie William West 17 May 1950 - 11 September 2014 The Herald Democrat September 14, 2014 Denison - Charlie William West, age 64, passed away at home after a battle with cancer. Mr. West was born May 17, 1950 in Denison, Texas, the son of Melvin and Sarah Elizabeth West. Charlie grew up working on his parents' Dairy Farm. He attended school in Denison and California. On May 13, 1967 he married Nancy Elaine Smith. Charlie and Nancy made their home in Denison. Charlie worked for a short time for Chrysler Boat in McKinney, Texas. The family moved to McKinney then to Blue Ridge, Texas. After a few years the family moved back to Denison where they remained to raise their four daughters. Mr. West worked as a mechanic most of his life. He always turned wrenches even when he was working other full time employment. Charlie worked seven years for MKT Railroad as a welder. During his employment with MKT he made many lifelong friends. He also worked as a house mover for Gilliam House Moving. Charlie owned and operated an auto repair shop in four locations in Denison - West Garage. It was said more than once, "Charlie would give you the shirt off his back". He was kind and compassionate. Charlie loved to fish when he was not working hard to provide for his family. He also loved to raise animals. Cattle, pigs, ducks, rabbits, chickens, pigeons, and goats, you name it and he probably had it or knew where you could get it. Mr. West enjoyed many things but he had a very special place in his heart for his grandchildren. It brought him great joy when all his daughters blessed him with grandsons. Charlie is survived by his loving family: wife of 47 years, Nancy West; four daughters, Tammy Gumaer and husband, Keith; Regina Erwin and husband, Paul; Brenda Raney and husband, Scot; Donna Russell and husband, Robert; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and numerous step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; 4 brothers; 1 sister; and his mother, Sarah Elizabeth West. He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin West. Funeral services for Mr. West were held at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Oak Ridge Baptist Church where he was a member. Interment followed at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Officiating was Keith Gumaer, Jimmy Bogan and Samuel Garrett. Pallbearers were his grandsons, Brandon Gumaer, Nathan Gumaer, Justin Wolf, Trevor Raney, Tyler Russell, and honorary, Jimmy Mead. The family would like to thank Heart to Heart Hospice. They were a God sent blessing to the family. Memorials may be made in his name to Heart to Heart Hospice, 600 East Taylor St., Sherman, Texas 75090. The family encourages the support.
