KEMP, OKLAHOMA MAN KILLED BY DEPUTY
Garwin Sweeney Shot by Wood Jamison

Garvin Sweeney, age 28, was shot and instantly killed at 7 o'clock Tuesday evening at Kemp, Oklahoma, about 15 miles east of Denison, according to G.W. Baird, a prominent merchant of Kemp, who came to Denison this morning to purchase funeral supplies for the deceased.
Mr. Baird's version of the affair, according to his statement made to a Herald representative this morning, was about as follows:
"Garvin Sweeney was employed at various times by several Choctaw Indians on a farm near Kemp.  Some time ago the Indians were arrested by a constable for alleged drunkeness.  Wood Jamison collected $4.50 from the Indians as a fine and the Indians complained that they had already been arrested and paid fines.  Mr. Sweeney, who was a friend of Wood Jamison, also the Indians, interceded in the Indian's behalf asking Jamison to remit the $4.50 fine.  Jamison took exception to Sweeney interceding and about 7 o'clock Tuesday evening while Sweeney was standing in the Ed Dillingham store at Kemp, Jamison called him to the door of the store and after a few words were exchanged Sweeney struck Jamison, knocking him to the sidewalk.  Jamison arose and was knocked down the second and third time.  In arising the third time he drew a .45 calibre revolver and fired one shot which struck Sweeney in the right arm, passing through his body and coming out the left arm, killing Sweeney almost instantly."
Immediately after the shooting Jamison left for Durant and according to Mr. Baird was placed in the Durant jail to await a preliminary hearing.  Jamison is about 50 years old and is married, residing with his family at Kemp.  Garvin Sweeney is 28, has a wife and one child.  He served overseas and bore a good reputation.  His parents reside at Carpenter's Bluff, east of Denison and has several brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were held at Kemp at 4 o'clock this afternoon with interment following in the Kemp cemetery.

Note: Garvin Sweeney is buried at Oakridge Cemetery, Denison, Grayson Co., Texas.
