Dow Nance's death was written in the Martin Gentry family Bible. The
family story told by Johnny Nance Rogers is that only of Lee's men went
to Dow's farm where a Union meeting was being conducted. He stole a
saddle to lure the men away from the farm. The rest of Lee's men lay
awaiting in a thicket near present-day Farm Road 160 and 78. As
they chased after the thief, Dow was gunned down along with several
other men.
