William Henry Stephenson


William Henry Stephens was born William "Henry" Stephenson owned a drug store in Collinsville.
He was born October 6, 1840 in Itawamba County, Mississippi and spent his early years learning to farm on the family property in Mississippi and later when they moved to Alabama.
On June 11, 1861 he enlisted for service with Co. A of the 11th Alabama Regiment, which was part of the Army of Northern Virginia.  He served as a hospital steward, assisting with various field surgeries at the battles of Manassas, Fredericksburg, Salem Church, and Gettysburg.  During this time, Henry advanced to the rank of captain and was classified as a field surgeon at the Seige of Petersburg.  He was present during Lee's surrender at Appomattox on April 9, 1965.  Once he returned to Mississippi he became a druggist, married in 1869, and moved with his family to Texas.  His drugstore operated until his death in 1913.  Henry was very involved with various civic groups and was an active member of the Masonic Lodge in Collinsville, Texas (Hiram Lodge #433).  The family continued to be merchants and operated a general store across from the drug store from 1901 - 1980. - - - Herman Reed
