The official report of his daring achievement follows: "Private Ozro L. Sloan, A.S. No. 38703, Company C., Ninth Infantry. For extraordinary heroism in action near Thiaucourt, France, September 12, 1918. When his platoon was under shell fire and threatened by an enemy counter attack, Private Sloan collected in the vicinity a number of soldiers separated from their organizations and led them to reinforce his platoon in the first line. While so engaged he was seriously wounded, but continued on duty with his platoon until completely exhausted. Home address, John G. Sloan, Whitewright, Tex." The Whitewright Sun Friday, October 17, 1919 pg. 6 HERO OF WORLD WAR RETURNS WITH MEDALS Ozro Sloan, son of Mr. and Mrs. G.P. Sloan of the Bethel community, arrived home recently, after an eventful two years in overseas military service. He took part in five of the big American drives against the Germans, and was bedecked with several distinguished service medals and marks by the American and French officers. He was wounded slightly some forty or fifty times, and was sent to the hospital three times with serious wounds received in battle. He was gassed in one engagement and in another was shot in the breast, having now in his possession the machine gun bullet that was extracted from his body. He has, in fact, an illustrious service record, with which he is fully credited in his discharge papers. He has seen and experienced almost every phase of army life. He went with the army of occupation when the armistice was signed, and came home with General Pershing, taking part in the notable parades of the Second Division recently in New York, Philadelphia and Washington.
