David R. Lockett


All five sons of Hugh and Sarah Lockett served in the CSA, 1st Regiment of Alabama. They ranged in age from 19 to 35 years at the time they enlisted.

  • John L. Lockett appears in the Company Muster Roll of Company G in 1862. There is a clothing receipt showing that he was in Company B in 1864. He signed the Oath of Allegiance on May 26, 1865. His physical description was 5' 8" tall, light hair, blue eyes, fair complexion.
  • Orren W. Lockett  was a First Lieutenant. He resigned from the CSA due to poor health on August 7, 1861. He returned to his company and was elected to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant on March 4, 1862. On April 8, 1862, he was captured at Island No. 10. He was transferred to Camp Chase, OH on April 13th and spent five days at USA Post Hospital, Camp Chase. He spent time at several pow camps. He returned to his company but was captured again at Port Hudson. He remained a pow for the duration of the war. He was released from Fort Delaware after signing the Oath of Allegiance. On the Oath he is described as having a ruddy complexion, dark hair, blue eyes, 5' 10" tall.
  • Hugh R. Lockett enlisted March 3, 1862. He was captured on April 8, 1862 with his brother, Winfield. While in the US Hospital Steamer Empress, he was diagnosed with Rubella. He later returned to his unit but was captured again at Port Hudson, with his brothers and paroled July 1863. In Nashville, he was captured, transferred and discharged with his brother, David.
  • Winfield J. Lockett enlisted, initially, for nine months on June 20, 1861. He then re-enlisted for two years. He was captured on Island No. 10 with his brothers. He spent time on the Union medical ship, USA Hospital Steamer Empress with the complaint of "Debilitus". He was again captured at Port Hudson. He died there on June 11, 1863. His widow, Sarah E. Lockett, filed a claim for settlement with the Office of the Confederate States, Auditor, February 13, 1864.
  • David R. Lockett enlisted On February 9, 1862. He was captured twice, first at Port Hudson and again at Nashville on Dec. 15, 1864. He was discharged on June 20, 1865
