Willie W. Judd The Whitewright Sun
Friday, September 13, 1918 pg. 8 LETTER FROM A PILOT GROVE BOY IN FRANCE July 21, 1918 Mr. Judd, - Dear Father: ...been raining today I thought I would drop you a few lines so you know I am fine...and enjoying life. ...this is a fine place here; lots of sights to see that we do not see in the United States. I will tell you a few of them: The first one is the trains. They look like toys compared to the trains in the United States. The passenger coaches are very small and the doors open on the side - no doors at the ends. They have five doors on each side and a partition between each door. There is just room for 8 passengers in each compartment. The box or freight cars are not much larger than is a Texas two-horse wagon. I do not see but very few automobiles and the most of them are of the Ford make. The street cars are very small, but they are all double decked. It looks odd to an American to see the seats constructed one above the other. Almost all of the wagons are drawn by one horse. Should you see two horses to one wagon, one will be hitched in front of the other. I haven't seen but one or two wooden buildings since I have been here. The most of them are built of brick or stone, and are not very tall. I went into a church today that was over 700 years old. They have well-kept farms here and raise as much produce on once acre as we do in Texas on 3 of 4 acres. Wheat and oats are now ripening and promise a good yield. They look fine. They have good live-stocke here. Do not see any mules; all are big horses and lots of good cattle and sheep. I do not see any corn or cotton; all grain stuff. There are lots of sights too numerous to mention. Will close, as it is mail time and I will tell you more as I see it. Hoping to hear from you soon, Corporal Willie W.
