The Herald Democrat August 19, 2012 SHERMAN - A memorial services for Dr. Frank Derrel Layman Jr. was held Monday morning, August 20 at the Western Heights Church of Christ with Dr. Jim McDoniel officiating. Dr. Layman, 76, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday August 18, 2012 at Texas Health Presbyterian-WNJ Medical Center. Frank was born October 17, 1935 in Whitewright, son of Frank Layman Sr and Emma Lou (Tomlin) Layman. He graduated from Sherman High School in 1953 and went on to graduate from the University of Texas and the Houston Dental School. After Dental School, Frank returned to Sherman and began his career in dentistry working alongside his father. He later built the Cottonwood Dental Offices and retired in 2000. In 1956, Frank married JoAnn Buckley in the Woods Street Church of Christ. Dr. Layman was a devoted Christian and served many years as a deacon and elder at the Woods Street Church of Christ. Later they joined Western Heights Church of Christ. At Western Heights, Frank taught a Bible Class for many years and participated in relief efforts in Alabama and Missouri. He was an avid tennis player and loved dogs. Dr. Layman will be remembered as a loyal husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, JoAnn of Sherman; 2 sons, Gregory Kent Layman and wife, Debra of McKinney and David Paul Layman and wife Jana of Houston; 4 grandchildren, David Blake Layman, Daniel Kent Layman, Krista Layman, and Kara Layman; sister-in-law, Becky McLain and her husband Wayne of Sherman; nephew, Doug Hooten and his wife Judy and their child Isabella; brother-in-law, William Buckley of Dallas; and 4 sisters, Frances Evans of San Antonio; Dorothy Franklin of Sherman; Linda Thompson of Plano; and Kathy Stevens of Dallas. He was preceded death by his parents. Dr. Layman lay in state for viewing Sunday, August 19 from noon to 4 p.m. at Waldo Funeral Home. Private family services were at Holloway Cemetery with Greg Layman, David Layman, Doug Hooten, David Blake Layman, Daniel Layman, and Wayne McLain serving as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Western Heights Missions Program at 800 Baker Park Drive, Sherman, TX 75092. JoAnn Layman, 87, of Sherman, died Friday, November 13, 2021 at Texoma Medical Center. She was born on August 21, 1935, daughter of Hazel and Jim Buckley and lived her early childhood years in Woodville, Oklahoma. During the creation of Lake Texoma, the residents of Woodville had to relocate, and JoAnn moved with her family to Sherman where she met Frank Layman, Jr. JoAnn and Frank were childhood friends and high school sweethearts. In 1956 JoAnn wed Dr. Frank D. Layman, Jr. and they were married 56 years. Most recently JoAnn was a resident of the Renaissance Retirement Living Center in Sherman and was so thankful for her many new friends and good neighbors. JoAnn was a dedicated Christian and an active member of Wood Street Church of Christ and Western Heights Church of Christ. Both congregations were dearly loved by JoAnn and Frank and were a tremendous blessing to their lives. She graduated from Sherman High School and attended North Texas State University. JoAnn was committed to supporting many charities, ministries, veteran and first responder organizations. She was also a very active member of Meals on Wheels as a young adult and worked briefly for Grayson College. JoAnn's spiritual gift was most definitely "hospitality". JoAnn was known for inviting many people into her home and spoling them with a beautiful table and gourmet meal. JoAnn was an avid collector of fine china and table decor that was used to treat her guests. JoAnn was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and brother, William Buckley, Sr. She is survived by many family friends including her 2 sons and their wives - Greg and Debra Layman of McKinney; and David and Jana Layman of Houston. She is survived by her beloved sister and husband, Becky and Wayne McLain of Sherman; her grandchildren: David and Kristi Layman of Denison; Daniel Layman of McKinney; and Krista and Kara Layman of Houston. Great-grandchildren: Stephen Layman of Denison; and Ivy Layman of Houston; and her nephew and family, Doug, Yvonne, and Isabella Hooten of Edmond, Oklahoma. Arrangements were made by Waldo Funeral Home for a private family graveside service held at Holloway Cemetery. Richard Oglesby officiated.
